An AA Group Inventory: Review the Meeting, Not Each Other
A group announces an inventory, and the word sounds personal. Are members expected to discuss their private Step work or assess one another? A group inventory has a different purpose: reviewing how the group functions and carries its message. Clarifying that purpose before the discussion makes participation easier.
Start with the group's purpose
The AA Group pamphlet describes groups periodically reviewing how they fulfil their purpose. It offers questions drawn from shared experience, including participation, sponsorship, anonymity and the meeting environment.
Choose a manageable scope. A group may want to examine one recurring difficulty before trying a broad review. Ask what the inventory session is intended to produce: observations, proposals or a later agenda. That avoids expecting the same conversation to solve every issue immediately.
Keep private inventories out of the exercise
The Twelve Steps describe personal recovery work. A group discussion about its own functioning is not an invitation to inspect another member's private inventory or decide how well they are working the programme.
Focus on what the group can observe and change. “The entrance instructions are missing from our listing” identifies an arrangement. “People here don't care about newcomers” assigns motives and gives the group little concrete information to investigate.
Make room for specific observations
Ask how members can contribute, how much time is available and whether someone will facilitate. A clear format can help a quiet observation receive attention alongside a confident opinion. Check what record, if any, will be kept.
You might describe a gap between an advertised access feature and the actual route into the room, or uncertainty about who replenishes literature. Include the relevant detail. If you do not know why something happens, say that rather than filling the gap with a story about someone's intentions.
Separate a suggestion from an agreed change
Record proposals clearly enough to consider later. “Update the listing” still needs an owner and an agreed correction. A possible change is not automatically adopted because it appeared in an inventory conversation.
Our group-conscience guide explains asking about a group's discussion and decision process. Establish what happens next and when members can hear the result. If an issue involves immediate safety, use the appropriate response rather than waiting for a routine inventory session.
Review recognition customs as a shared arrangement
If anniversary handovers cause confusion, discuss the process: who asks for a year, what is available and how a person can choose privacy. Our AA chip guide distinguishes meeting customs from retail purchases.
Do not use a discussion about stock or presentation to grade individual recovery. A decorative coin remains optional. If the group changes an arrangement, explain the practical choice to the people handling it and leave a usable note for the next volunteer.
Medallions to consider
If a person separately wants an AA anniversary keepsake, these current designs offer different milestone selections. A product choice does not replace a group's discussion about recognition, privacy or volunteer responsibilities.

Common questions
Is this the same as a personal Step Four inventory?
No. The focus here is the group's shared functioning, not an examination of members' private lives.
Does every suggestion become a rule?
Clarify how proposals are considered and what the group actually agrees.
Can milestone recognition be included?
Yes, as a practical group arrangement. Keep preferences and actual sobriety dates separate from judgements about members.
