AA Medallion Roman Numerals: How to Read the Year

A medallion marked X can look mysterious if you are used to ordinary numbers. On an annual AA coin, it usually represents ten years. Learning a few Roman numerals makes it easier to recognize the milestone and check that you are ordering the right variant.

The basic Roman numeral rules

Roman numerals use letters for values. For common sobriety anniversary numbers, the main ones are I (1), V (5), X (10), and L (50). Letters usually add together: VIII is five plus three, or eight.

A smaller numeral placed before a larger one subtracts: IV is four, IX is nine, XL is forty. This is why nineteen is XIX rather than a long line of I characters. The order matters.

Common anniversary numerals

Years Numeral Years Numeral
1 I 10 X
2 II 15 XV
3 III 18 XVIII
4 IV 19 XIX
5 V 20 XX
6 VI 25 XXV
7 VII 30 XXX
8 VIII 40 XL
9 IX 50 L

For another example, XXIV is 24: two tens plus four. That numeral on an annual coin means something different from a token explicitly marked “24 hours.” Always keep the unit in view.

Do not mistake the display image for your order

A product may use one photographed year to represent a whole range. If the image shows XX, it does not mean every order is a twenty-year coin. The variant selector determines the option you add to the cart.

Choose the year, check the cart label, and read any variant-specific information. If the image and selected option appear inconsistent, clarify the item before buying. It is easier to resolve that question before a gift is on its way.

Using the numeral in a gift

Confirm the recipient's milestone privately. A person celebrating ten years needs the ten-year option, not a design you selected because X happens to look appealing. If the date is still ahead, keep the gift until the anniversary arrives.

A short card can use ordinary numbers even when the coin uses Roman numerals. Write “Congratulations on 10 years” if that feels clearer. You do not need to reproduce every inscription or explain the numbering in the message.
