Does AA Cost Money? Contributions, Books and Coins Explained
An invitation to a free meeting can seem confusing when you also see a collection basket, books on a table and sobriety coins for sale online. These involve different choices. Knowing the distinction lets you ask a practical question without treating every object in the room as something you must buy.
Start with the membership question
AA's contributions and self-support information explains how members support AA services. Membership does not require a paid subscription. If you are unsure what a particular request for money relates to, ask the person explaining it.
Budget for any travel or other arrangements you personally need, but keep those separate from a supposed AA entrance charge. If a listing appears to sell admission, confirm whether it concerns a special event rather than an ordinary meeting. Use current official local information to check the distinction.
Understand the voluntary collection
A group may have rent, refreshments, literature and service expenses. A voluntary contribution helps meet those costs; it is not a fee that buys a different level of membership. You can ask how the group's collection works without sharing your financial circumstances publicly.
Don't assume that the amount another person gives sets an amount you must match. Equally, don't treat a larger contribution as a claim on the group's decisions. Practical questions about finances belong in the group's appropriate discussion, where information can be considered together.
Ask before buying literature
There may be literature available to read, borrow or buy, depending on the group and local arrangements. Ask which is being offered. A book displayed on a table does not explain its terms by itself.
Before buying, check the title, language and format you want. Official AA resources can help you identify the book someone mentioned. If a suggested purchase would be difficult for your budget, say that privately and ask what reading options are available. This guide does not promise that every group lends or gives away books.
Keep chip customs separate from retail shopping
Some groups recognise milestones with chips, and local practices differ. Ask what your meeting does. Our guide to obtaining AA chips covers meeting and retail routes; a retail purchase remains your own optional decision.
A decorative medallion does not buy AA membership, verify someone's history or give its owner a higher standing. If a group has no chip for a particular milestone that evening, it does not mean you need to purchase one before returning. Talk with a willing member about the local arrangement.
Distinguish an event budget from attendance
A convention can have registration, accommodation or meal charges. Read the organiser's current terms and decide whether those costs fit your budget. Do not transfer a convention's price to the question of ordinary AA membership.
Before spending, write down what is included and what is optional. You may decide to attend meetings without buying literature, travelling to a convention or choosing a keepsake. These decisions can be made separately, at a pace that suits your finances.
Medallions to consider
These are optional retail AA anniversary medallions. Buying either is separate from membership, meeting contributions and any chip your group may offer. Review the selector and your own budget before choosing.

Common questions
Must I contribute at my first meeting?
The collection is voluntary. AA membership has no dues or fees.
Does an expensive coin show more commitment?
A price tag cannot measure a person's recovery. Choose a keepsake only if it suits your wishes and budget.
Are convention charges membership fees?
No. Check the specific event's registration terms and keep them separate from ordinary AA membership.
