An Al-Anon Group Representative: Carry the Question, Bring Back the Information
Your Al-Anon group needs a representative, and you want to understand the commitment before answering. Start with Al-Anon's own guidance. Similar role names in AA or another organisation do not tell you the eligibility, responsibilities or service arrangements for this fellowship.
Read the actual requirements before volunteering
The official G-11 guideline explains the role, including district and assembly participation. It states a three-year term and sets out eligibility that excludes members who are also AA members. Read that wording directly and clarify how it applies in your service structure.
Do not replace the guideline with another member's memory or assume an AA role has the same conditions. If you cannot take this particular position, ask about other ways to help. Eligibility for a role is a different question from whether you belong in a fellowship conversation.
Clarify the work and calendar
Ask which district or assembly meetings you would attend, when they occur and how the group receives reports. Check the arrangements for an alternate and any agreed expenses. An enthusiastic yes is easier to sustain when you understand the actual dates and responsibilities.
Read the relevant Al-Anon/Alateen Service Manual alongside the guideline. If an abbreviation or voting matter is unclear, ask the district contact before making assumptions. Keep current contact and meeting information with the role's records, rather than depending on one person's private memory.
Prepare a report with a clear request
Bring back the information your group needs: what was discussed, what requires a group view and when a response is needed. Distinguish a proposal from an agreed decision. You can explain what you understood while identifying a point you still need to check.
A short report can offer members a way to find more detail without filling the whole meeting. Ask for an appropriate time to present it. Carry the group's question accurately to the relevant service conversation instead of quietly substituting your own preference.
Keep service, reading and recognition separate
The guideline also points representatives towards service resources and fellowship publications. A reading recommendation can support discussion, but it does not replace the group's process. Ask which resource helps answer the question rather than distributing material without context.
Our Al-Anon recognition article addresses another subject. A service term is not a personal sobriety duration, and holding a role does not automatically call for an AA coin. Thank a representative for the specific work; confirm any separate anniversary occasion and the recipient's preferences before choosing a gift.
Medallions to consider
These AA medallions suit a separately confirmed AA anniversary when wanted. They do not represent Al-Anon service eligibility, election or completion of a representative term.

Common questions
Is an Al-Anon GR the same role as an AA GSR?
Do not assume identical requirements or structures. Use each fellowship's own current guidance.
Can an AA member automatically serve as an Al-Anon GR?
G-11 explicitly addresses this eligibility restriction. Read it and check the applicable service guidance before volunteering.
Does the role put the representative in charge of the group?
G-11 describes a trusted service role and two-way communication, rather than personal control of the group.
