Al-Anon's Three Cs: A Starting Point for Separating Responsibility

Al-Anon's Three Cs: A Starting Point for Separating Responsibility

When another person's drinking affects your life, a conversation can become an argument about who should have prevented it. Al-Anon's Three Cs offer a phrase members use to explore that confusion. The phrase is a starting point for reflection, not a complete answer to every family decision.

Find the phrase in its fellowship context

Al-Anon's official Three Cs resource introduces the phrase through a member's account. That context matters: a personal explanation can offer perspective without becoming an instruction for every reader to make the same choices.

Start with the part of the phrase that raises a question for you. You might be trying to distinguish an accusation from a responsibility, or an offer of help from an attempt to control an outcome. Discuss that specific question instead of expecting a short saying to decide an entire relationship.

Name the decision that belongs to you

Separate the other person's action from the choice you currently face. For example, deciding whether you can give a lift is different from guaranteeing what another adult will do afterwards. This is an illustrative distinction, not a personal story or a rule about what help everyone should offer.

You can make a clear agreement about your own availability. You can also recognise when a question needs more information. Avoid promising control over someone else's future behaviour simply to end an uncomfortable conversation or reassure everyone that the problem has been solved.

Do not use the phrase to dismiss practical concerns

A fellowship saying does not replace appropriate help with safety, health, legal or financial questions. If a concern belongs with a qualified professional or responsible service, take it there. Applying a phrase thoughtfully should not require ignoring a situation that needs attention.

Likewise, recognising limits does not make your own commitments disappear. If you agreed to something and need to change it, communicate clearly. Keep the responsibility for that communication distinct from responsibility for another person's drinking or their response to your decision.

Keep reflection and recognition on separate tracks

Our Al-Anon recognition guide concerns another question: what a group or individual may choose to acknowledge. Understanding a phrase does not create a sobriety duration, and a token cannot measure how fully someone has applied it.

If supporting a family member, ask whether they want a conversation, a reading reference or simply time. Do not give an AA coin as though it certifies their Al-Anon progress. Consider an AA keepsake only for a separately confirmed AA anniversary that the person wants recognised.

Medallions to consider

Common questions

Does the phrase mean I have no responsibilities?

No. Distinguish your own choices and commitments from a claim that you can control another person's drinking.

Can the Three Cs decide a medical or legal question?

No. Seek the appropriate qualified advice for those questions.

Does learning the phrase call for an AA medallion?

No. Fellowship reflection and a separate AA sobriety anniversary are different occasions.
