Chairing an Al-Anon Meeting: Prepare the Group's Format and Share the Time

Chairing an Al-Anon Meeting: Prepare the Group's Format and Share the Time

Agreeing to chair an Al-Anon meeting does not mean you need to produce an original programme from memory. Start with the group's own format and ask what the commitment includes. A little preparation can leave you free to listen and keep the meeting moving without trying to become everybody's adviser.

Get the actual format before preparing remarks

Use the official Service Manual resource for general guidance, then ask the group for the outline it currently follows. Confirm whether you are introducing a topic, coordinating a literature discussion or welcoming a speaker. Those tasks need different preparation.

Ask who opens the room or online session and where the readings are kept. If using a digital copy, check that you can open it before the meeting begins. Have a named contact for practical problems. Learning how to find the material is more reliable than assuming you will remember every opening and closing detail.

Choose a manageable reading and introduction

If the group asks you to choose a topic, identify a relevant Al-Anon resource and a passage you can locate again. Check how long the introduction should be. A short opening can give members a shared starting point while leaving time for their experience rather than using most of the meeting yourself.

Our How Al-Anon Works reading guide helps with finding a question in a book. Keep your own explanation separate from the publication's wording, and ask about the group's literature choices instead of substituting a general internet quotation for an identified Al-Anon reading.

Make the participation arrangements clear

Ask how this group invites people to share and handles time. If a reminder is needed, use the group's agreed approach consistently. You can state the practical arrangement without commenting on the value of a member's experience or trying to resolve their personal situation from the chair.

Check how newcomers are welcomed and how members can ask practical questions afterwards. Our beginners' meeting guide distinguishes a particular beginner arrangement from assumptions made about a meeting name. Do not create an additional format during the session without knowing what the group has agreed.

Close the meeting and return the responsibility

Leave enough time for the agreed closing and required announcements. Afterwards, return the readings or equipment to the proper place and pass practical matters to the responsible person. If something in the format needs review, describe the question for the appropriate group discussion rather than rewriting the group's procedure on your own.

Keep any notes about the role focused on logistics, not a record of members' personal sharing. A useful handover might identify where the format is stored or which practical task still needs attention. Serving once does not make you the permanent owner of the meeting, and a clear handover helps the next willing member participate.

Medallions to consider

For a separate AA anniversary, these medallions are optional personal gifts. Chairing an Al-Anon meeting does not establish an AA sober date or create a requirement to give a coin.
