What Does Conference-Approved Literature Mean in AA and Al-Anon?

What Does Conference-Approved Literature Mean in AA and Al-Anon?

Someone asks whether a book is conference-approved, but the phrase can sound like a judgement on everything else you read. Begin with two practical questions: which fellowship is being discussed, and who published the item? Similar language in AA and Al-Anon refers to their own literature processes.

Check which fellowship the label concerns

AA's official explanation describes approval of written or audiovisual material for publication by its General Service Office. Al-Anon has its own Conference Approved Literature, often shortened to CAL.

Do not decide from the word conference alone. Look at the title page, publishing information and the organisation named in any approval statement. A book about a twelve-step subject is not necessarily published by the same fellowship as the meeting you attend.

Read the actual publishing information

Check the source rather than relying on a marketplace title or an unattributed image. Al-Anon's CAL catalogue explains its literature seal and lists its publications. An exact title or item code can help identify what a meeting intends to use.

If someone lends you a book, note the title before buying a similar-looking one. Different formats, editions and translations can create practical confusion. Ask what is needed for the particular reading rather than assuming every version will have matching page references.

Distinguish approval from a ban on personal reading

AA's explanation says the term does not imply disapproval of other material or tell individuals everything they may read. That is different from a group deciding which publications it will use during its meeting.

Al-Anon's literature resources include information on why its groups use CAL. If you want to introduce a reading, ask about that group's process and purpose. Avoid turning a question about the meeting's shared material into a dispute over somebody else's private bookshelf.

Keep a source, a reflection and a recommendation distinct

A published passage, your own response to it and a recommendation from a friend are three different kinds of material. Identify which you are sharing. You can describe what you found useful without suggesting that every sentence you add carries the publication's approval.

For a reading discussion, name the title and section, then keep your interpretation in your own words. If you circulate material, check the publisher's current content-use rules. Approval of a publication is not blanket permission to reproduce it in full.

Apply the same care to product descriptions

An AA-themed coin can contain familiar symbols without being fellowship-issued literature. Our guide to official coins explains that separate purchasing question. A book's approval statement should not be transferred to a retailer's keepsake simply because the items are sold or given together.

If assembling a gift, identify each part accurately: the actual publication, a personal card and an optional medallion. For a recipient in Al-Anon, our token guide explains why local recognition customs and AA sobriety medallions need to be considered separately.

Medallions to consider

These are optional retail AA anniversary medallions. They are presented as catalog keepsakes, with no claim of Conference approval. If paired with literature, choose the publication and the person's confirmed sobriety milestone separately.

Common questions

Does AA approval also mean Al-Anon approval?

They are separate fellowships. Check the organisation, publisher and relevant literature information.

Does the label apply to a coin sold beside a book?

A literature approval statement does not certify a retailer's medallion or other merchandise.

Can my group explain which reading it uses?

Ask the group's contact or literature person about the exact publication and the group's process.
