Moving to a New City Sober: Keep Connections While You Settle In
Moving to a New City Sober: Keep Connections While You Settle In
A move can put familiar people, meeting times and everyday routines out of reach at once. You don't have to rebuild everything during the first week. Before moving day, identify a few contacts and places you can use while you learn the area. Keep the old connections that still work, and give new ones time to become familiar.
Build a short list before packing day
If meetings are part of your recovery, look up options near your new home and work. Save a small number that fit your real schedule, including a backup if travel or unpacking changes your plans. Check language, accessibility and meeting format.
A.A.'s meeting-information FAQ directs people to local service offices, Meeting Guide and online resources. Contact the local resource when a listing is unclear. A pin on a map doesn't tell you whether the entrance is accessible or whether the group has recently changed rooms.
Carry the information you may need immediately
Save the address, start time and any contact details somewhere you can reach without searching through moving emails. Check the route from where you'll actually be staying. Temporary accommodation may be far from your eventual neighborhood.
For online meetings or calls with existing contacts, check the time zone explicitly. A weekly call at seven in one city may land during your workday in another. Agree on a new time before the move if possible. Keep private contact details out of public moving documents or shared address lists.
Make the first visit a small task
You can arrive, introduce yourself as new to the area, and ask one practical question about the group. You don't need to decide on a home group immediately or compare every detail with your previous meeting.
If you're unfamiliar with the building, allow time to find the entrance. Bring what you ordinarily need, such as glasses for reading or a charged phone for the route home. Afterward, note whether the time and journey were workable. Try another option if they weren't. Convenience can matter when a visit needs to become repeatable.
Keep old contacts without postponing local life
Arrange a call with someone you already know, but don't make one person's availability your entire plan. Ask when it's reasonable to contact them and what to do if they can't answer. A move doesn't erase the relationships you've built.
Alongside those calls, try one local activity that isn't a moving errand: a walk, a class or a familiar kind of cafe. Our sober-friendship guide offers simple ways to turn a first conversation into another occasion. You can remain connected to your old community while learning your new one.
Revisit the plan after the first week
Travel times, energy and work patterns can look different once you're there. Keep what worked and change what didn't. If a meeting requires a journey you can't maintain, find a more practical option rather than treating the first choice as a promise.
A familiar coin, book or photograph can be easy to keep with your personal belongings instead of a distant moving box. It is optional. What matters for this plan is knowing whom you can reach and where you can go. Replacing a keepsake can wait until the essentials are sorted.
Medallions to consider
If a familiar milestone coin is part of what you carry, these are optional choices. A new address doesn't create a new sobriety milestone.
