Online or In-Person AA Meetings: Choosing What Fits Your Week

Online or In-Person AA Meetings: Choosing What Fits Your Week

A meeting can fit your calendar and still be difficult to reach. Travel, caring responsibilities, a shared home or an unreliable connection can change what is practical. Comparing online and in-person AA meetings starts with those realities, rather than a rule that one format must suit everyone.

Compare the whole time commitment

For an in-person meeting, count the journey, parking or public transport, access to the building, and the return trip. Confirm the current address and whether there are steps or other access details you need to ask about.

For an online meeting, allow time to find the link, enter any passcode, resolve audio problems and settle somewhere you can listen. AA's meeting information describes in-person, online and telephone options. Availability depends on the meeting, so check the listing rather than assuming every group has a remote connection.

Check what privacy means in each setting

At home, headphones can reduce what other people hear, though they do not make your own speech private. Consider who can enter the room and whether your display name, profile photograph or background reveals more than you intend.

In person, think about the building entrance and how comfortable you feel arriving. Ask the host about the group's practices if you have questions. Do not photograph participants, record a meeting, or share identifying details about people you encounter. A platform's features do not replace respectful behaviour.

Read the listing before you join

Online or in person describes how you attend. It does not tell you whether the meeting is open or closed, its language, or whether it focuses on a particular subject. Look at those details separately.

Save a contact route for the host or local office in case the listing is unclear. If a link fails or a door is locked, use another current option rather than repeatedly trying an old address. A small backup plan is especially helpful when you have only a short window available.

Plan for the conversation around the meeting

You may find it easier to approach somebody beside the coffee table than in a video room. Or speaking through a screen may feel more manageable at first. Notice your own experience without treating it as a judgement of everybody else's.

For an online group, ask whether there is time to speak with the host or exchange contact details privately. In person, allow a few minutes after the meeting if you want to talk. Do not assume that joining either format automatically gives you a support network; relationships usually require further contact.

Try a mix you can repeat

Choose a realistic trial: perhaps a nearby meeting on a day you already travel and an online option on a busy evening. Afterwards, ask whether you could hear, participate as you wanted, and make a connection. Change one practical obstacle before dismissing an entire format.

This is a planning comparison, not a claim that the formats produce identical outcomes. If your circumstances change, your meeting choices can change too. Keep current details for the options you found useful so the next decision takes less effort.

Medallions to consider

An anniversary can be acknowledged with friends from either kind of meeting if you want it recognised. Choose a medallion for the actual milestone, rather than the year shown in a catalog photograph.

Annual options from 1 year to 50 years; also 24 hours and 18 months. Open the product page and use the Sobriety Time selector to choose your milestone; the photograph shows a sample year.

Common questions

Do I have to choose only one format?

No. You can attend different meetings in different ways, subject to each meeting's listing and participation guidance.

Can I always leave my camera off?

Practices vary. Check the meeting guidance or ask the host rather than assuming a universal camera rule.

Is an online meeting automatically open to visitors?

No. Read whether it is open or closed and follow the meeting's eligibility guidance.
