How to Say No to Alcohol Without Explaining Your Whole Life
How to Say No to Alcohol Without Explaining Your Whole Life
Sometimes the difficult part of refusing a drink is the question that follows. You may be happy to say you're sober, or you may want to keep the conversation about something else. Preparing a few words lets you choose how much to share in that moment, without inventing a story or answering every question.
Choose wording you can actually say
“No thanks, I'm not drinking” works in many settings. If you want an alternative, add “I'd like sparkling water.” If you prefer to be more open, “I'm sober, so I'll have a soda” is also clear. Choose the sentence that feels natural in your own voice.
NIAAA's Script Your No worksheet invites people to prepare a response to a drinking-pressure situation. Practice the situation you expect, such as a colleague ordering a round, rather than trying to memorize a speech for every possible occasion.
Separate an offer from pressure
Someone who doesn't know your preference may offer a drink once. A straightforward answer may settle it. Repeated offers after a clear refusal are a different situation, and you don't have to keep finding new reasons.
Try “No, thanks. I meant it” or “Please stop asking.” You can then move to another conversation. Avoid offering an excuse that isn't true, especially one that invites follow-up questions. You can decline alcohol because you have decided not to drink it. The other person doesn't have to agree with the reason.
Decide how much you want to disclose
A dinner with a trusted friend may be somewhere you want to discuss recovery. A crowded reception may not be. You can tell the same person more on another occasion without treating the first answer as dishonest.
If somebody asks why, “It's personal, and I'm happy with the decision” sets a boundary. “I'd rather talk about something else” is also an answer. If you want to tell friends deliberately, our privacy and disclosure guide helps you choose the audience and request you want to make.
Plan for the setting, too
At a restaurant, order your own drink clearly. At a wedding, ask about options before the event if that would make the evening simpler. If a round is being ordered, speak before someone places an alcoholic drink in front of you.
Arrange a way to leave if the gathering stops working for you. A well-practiced sentence cannot control another person's behavior. You can end a conversation or go home without winning a debate about whether one drink matters. Our wedding plan applies this to a longer event.
Keep one person's response in perspective
A friend may accept your answer immediately. Another may be clumsy, curious or defensive about their own drinking. You don't need to diagnose their reaction. Notice whether they respect the boundary after you've stated it.
For an ongoing relationship, you can be specific later: “When I say no, please don't offer again.” That gives the person something clear to do. If you want support before a difficult event, talk to someone who understands your circumstances. A coin or reminder can be personal to you, but it doesn't replace that conversation or a workable exit.

Common questions
Do I have to say I'm in recovery?
No. You can refuse alcohol without discussing recovery.
Can I just ask for water?
Yes. A clear drink order can be all the conversation needs.
What if someone won't stop?
Restate the boundary briefly, then end the exchange or leave. You don't owe them a convincing argument.
