Your First AA Answering-Service Shift: Prepare the Handover Before Taking Calls

Your First AA Answering-Service Shift: Prepare the Handover Before Taking Calls

A telephone service shift begins before the first ring. You need to know which service you are covering, what it offers and how it connects callers with local AA help. Enthusiasm is useful; a current set of instructions and a reachable service coordinator make it possible to put that willingness to work.

Clarify which job you accepted

The GSO answering-services guideline describes several organisational arrangements rather than one universal system. Your shift may involve answering inquiries, passing a message or connecting a caller with a designated contact. Ask the coordinator to demonstrate the actual local procedure.

Confirm the start and end time, the equipment or forwarding arrangement, and who covers a missed shift. If you cannot fulfil the commitment, notify the named person using the agreed channel. Do not assume leaving a message with a friend has arranged cover or that another volunteer will notice a gap.

Use meeting information you can identify

Keep the service's approved meeting source available and learn how to find the date, location and attendance information in it. A listing remembered from last year is not a substitute for the current local source. Ask what to do when a caller reports an incorrect entry.

When a question concerns receiving a milestone token, our AA chip guide can provide background, but the particular group must explain its own arrangements. Give the caller a way to ask the group rather than promising that a named coin will be waiting at a meeting.

Practise the difficult handoffs during training

Ask how the local service handles language or access needs, requests from family members, callers seeking a Twelfth Step contact and situations requiring urgent help outside AA. You do not need to invent answers during a call. Obtain the approved process and identify whom to contact when you are unsure.

Keep a calm distinction between giving AA information and providing professional assessment. A volunteer shift does not make you a clinician, emergency dispatcher or spokesperson for every group. If the training leaves an important scenario unanswered, raise it with the coordinator before taking the shift alone.

Leave a usable handover

Find out what information, if any, the service requires you to record and where it belongs. Use its approved privacy and retention arrangements. Do not create a personal archive of callers' names, numbers or recovery details, and do not forward contact lists to informal group chats.

At the agreed end time, confirm the transfer of responsibility using the local process. Note unresolved service matters through the authorised channel, not a public anecdote about the caller. Our intergroup and central-office guide helps distinguish the organisation managing a service from the individual volunteer covering one shift.

Medallions to consider

If separately recognising a willing volunteer's confirmed AA anniversary, ask about their keepsake preferences. A medallion is not a qualification for telephone service or a substitute for training.
