What Is an AA Twelfth Step Call? Peer Contact and Its Limits

What Is an AA Twelfth Step Call? Peer Contact and Its Limits

You contact a local AA resource and hear someone mention a Twelfth Step call. It may be unclear whether that means a meeting, a sponsor assignment or a professional appointment. Asking what contact is actually being offered can help you decide what information and arrangements you need.

Understand the purpose of the contact

AA's sponsorship pamphlet distinguishes a Twelfth Step call from an ongoing sponsor relationship. The contact can introduce AA and give someone a chance to hear another member's experience; a continuing arrangement needs its own conversation.

If you have asked for help, you can begin with a practical question about what is being offered. You do not need to present a polished account of your life before asking how to find a meeting or speak with a willing member.

Ask the local service about its arrangement

AA's answering-service guidelines address local services and the handling of Twelfth Step calls. Use your current local AA resource to find out what is available, rather than assuming every area offers the same response.

Ask whether contact would be by phone or another agreed arrangement, when a reply may be possible and whom to contact if it does not happen. Do not treat a callback request as a guaranteed immediate appointment or a promise that a particular person will become your sponsor.

Keep the first conversation specific

You might want to ask how a nearby meeting works, whether you can attend a particular format or what sponsorship involves. Choose the question that matters now. Let the other person explain what they can offer rather than agreeing to several unclear plans.

Share the practical information needed for the agreed contact, and ask how it will be used. If a proposed arrangement makes you uncomfortable, say so and ask the service about another option. Willingness to seek help does not remove your ability to ask questions or decline a particular arrangement.

Keep urgent needs separate

AA's group resources describe the fellowship's purpose and limits. A peer conversation is not an assessment of medical needs, a detox plan or emergency treatment. Seek appropriate urgent local care for a medical emergency or immediate danger.

If you are a member being asked to help, use your local service's guidance and experienced support. Do not improvise clinical advice or promise to manage a situation beyond your role. Sharing AA experience does not make someone responsible for providing every kind of assistance.

Agree the next step explicitly

Before ending the conversation, clarify what happens next, if anything. It may be a meeting time, another agreed call or information to read. Repeat the practical detail so each person knows what has actually been arranged.

A keepsake is separate from this contact. Our AA chip guide explains milestone recognition and retail options. No purchase is needed to ask about AA, and receiving or buying a coin does not establish an ongoing sponsorship relationship.

Medallions to consider

These optional AA keepsakes are for a separately confirmed milestone. They are not required for a Twelfth Step call, do not purchase access to a member and do not replace professional care.

Common questions

Does one call make the person my sponsor?

Not automatically. Discuss any continuing sponsorship arrangement directly.

Is this a professional treatment appointment?

No. AA contact is peer support; clinical and urgent needs require appropriate services.

Must I buy a chip before asking for help?

No. A retail keepsake is optional and separate from contacting AA.
