What Does an AA GSR Do? A Group's Link to General Service

Your group asks for a new GSR, and the initials sound more complicated than the work you already know. Before volunteering, find out what the role connects, which meetings are involved and how the group expects information to come back. A title alone does not explain the commitment.

Begin with the relevant service structure

AA's GSR explanation describes the elected representative's link between a group and AA as a whole. Its participation resources explain general service in the US and Canada. Names and routes of representation can differ elsewhere.

Ask your group which local district or service body it participates in. Find current information from that body rather than copying another area's meeting dates or position description. Knowing whom you will communicate with makes the role less abstract.

Find out what needs to travel both ways

The work is not only attending another meeting. Ask how you will bring questions from the group, receive information and report back. A useful report separates a decision, an item needing discussion and a date members may need to remember.

Keep a short record of agreed actions. If you do not understand an agenda item, ask for clarification rather than inventing an explanation to sound experienced. Our group-conscience guide covers preparing a specific question for the group's own discussion.

Check the practical commitment before accepting

Ask about meeting frequency, travel, preparation and the expected term. Clarify whether there is an alternate and how the group handles any agreed expenses. Do not assume an arrangement in one district applies in another.

Look at your actual calendar. Caring responsibilities, work and transport may affect which meetings you can attend. Raising those details before an election gives the group useful information. It also avoids accepting a role on the assumption that someone will quietly cover every conflict.

Distinguish representation from personal authority

When reporting a group position, explain what was actually agreed. Your own view and the group's discussion are different things. If the group has not considered a question, say that and ask what process is appropriate.

Long experience can help you understand context, but it does not answer every question about a new service role. Our oldtimer article is background to experience in AA, not a job description or a qualification certificate for this commitment.

Arrange a useful handover

Ask the outgoing representative for current contacts, recurring dates and unfinished group questions. Keep private member stories out of the service record. A simple list of what remains to be done can be more useful than years of unorganised messages.

Before finishing your own term, update that same information for the next person. If the group wants to acknowledge your help, discuss the occasion clearly. A service anniversary and a personal sobriety milestone are separate dates, even if they fall in the same month.

Medallions to consider

If service recognition coincides with a personal AA anniversary, choose any sobriety medallion using the person's confirmed milestone. The number of years in a service position does not establish which numbered coin fits.

Common questions

Is a GSR the group's boss?

The role represents and communicates. Ask how your group reaches and conveys its decisions.

Is a GSR always the same as an intergroup representative?

Do not assume the names mean the same thing everywhere. Confirm the roles in your local service structure.

Does a service anniversary determine a numbered coin?

No. A numbered AA sobriety medallion should match the person's actual selected sobriety milestone.
