Finding a Big Book Passage When the Page Numbers Don't Match

Finding a Big Book Passage When the Page Numbers Don't Match

The meeting chair announces a page and everyone seems to find it except you. Your PDF opens somewhere else, or the book on your lap has a different layout. Before deciding you have the wrong reading, check which text and which kind of page number the group means.

Identify the book before the number

“The book” may mean Alcoholics Anonymous, Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions or another reading. Ask for the exact title. AA's Big Book resource page provides a chapter-based route into its online text.

A chapter title gives you a useful second way to find the place. If someone says a page without naming the section, ask before searching through several files. You can clarify quietly without needing to explain why you have a different copy.

Distinguish the printed page from the viewer counter

A PDF viewer may count covers and introductory pages before reaching the numbered main text. The counter at the top of the screen is therefore not necessarily the page number printed on the scanned page.

Check the visible page itself. If a file contains only one chapter, its viewer may begin at one even though the printed chapter begins later in the book. Navigate using the chapter and printed number together, rather than repeatedly entering the announced number into the viewer.

Check the edition, language and format

Look at the title and publication information in your copy. A translated text, an abridged format and a separate reading tool should not be assumed to share every page reference. Ask which version the group is using before buying another book.

The AA literature catalogue lists several formats and the distinct Plain Language Big Book: A Tool for Reading Alcoholics Anonymous. Read the actual title rather than identifying a publication only by its colour or an informal description.

Use a short phrase to confirm the place

Ask the chair for the first few words of the intended paragraph, or ask a willing person beside you to point out the heading. Compare that with the text in front of you. You do not need to copy the whole reading to confirm you have found it.

If you bookmark it, record the title and chapter as well as the number. That small extra detail makes the note useful later when you switch devices or formats. Keep your own reflections separate from words you are quoting from the book.

Treat reading references differently from coin numbers

A number on a medallion usually concerns the selected milestone, while a book's page number locates text. Our history of AA chips covers the token custom, a different subject from identifying a reading.

If someone wants to connect an anniversary gift with a meaningful passage, put the book title and reference in a separate card. Check the recipient's actual year independently. Neither the page you read nor the date you joined a study meeting determines the milestone to order.

Medallions to consider

If an anniversary gift accompanies a book or card, choose its milestone separately from any reading reference. These catalog images show sample inscriptions; use the product selector for the recipient's actual sobriety time.

Common questions

Should I always type the printed page into my PDF viewer?

Check how the file is organised. Its counter may include covers or begin at the start of an individual chapter.

Must I buy another copy if my layout differs?

Ask which title and format the group uses first. A chapter or short phrase may resolve the confusion.

Can I put a reading reference in a gift card?

Yes. Identify the title and section clearly, and check the sobriety milestone separately.
