Online AA Meeting Privacy: Check Your Name, Sound and Background
An online meeting can fit your day, but the device you use may carry details you did not mean to show. A work-account name, family photographs behind you or sound through an open doorway can reveal more than expected. Review the setup before joining, rather than discovering it during someone else's share.
Check the identity the platform displays
A device may remember a full name from another call. Review the joining screen and the platform's current controls before entering. Follow the group's instructions and ask the host if you need help choosing a suitable display name.
AA Australia's safeguarding guidance includes using a first or preferred name online. That is one practical measure, not a promise of complete anonymity. Consider the account photograph too if it would reveal information you prefer to keep separate.
Look at the whole camera view
Check what appears behind and beside you: post addressed to you, a workplace badge, family pictures or a reflection. A plain area may be simpler than relying on a virtual background, especially if the effect changes when you move.
Ask about the group's camera expectations rather than assuming every meeting uses the same approach. If your available setting does not suit participation, consider a different time or another listed meeting. Do not film or photograph other members to demonstrate your setup.
Review sound in both directions
Headphones help keep the meeting's audio from playing into the room. They do not make your own voice inaudible to people nearby. Check who may enter, what can be heard through a door and whether you can speak privately.
If others share your home, agree a practical time and space without giving them information about members. Close unrelated media that might play unexpectedly. Before unmuting, make sure you are responding to the meeting rather than another call or conversation.
Ask about sharing, screenshots and recordings
AA's anonymity resources discuss protecting both your own identity and other members'. Avoid screenshots, forwarding private joining details or sharing stories that identify who attended. Ask the host how the group communicates its expectations.
Do not treat a disabled recording control as proof that no participant can capture anything. Choose what you are comfortable sharing in the actual setting. You can ask a question about the arrangements without requesting details about another member's identity.
Keep anniversary recognition optional
If the meeting recognises milestones, ask how it happens and what you want to share. A coin held to the camera may show its inscription clearly even if other identifying details remain private. Check the whole image before posting it elsewhere.
Our AA chip overview explains the milestone objects. Choosing a keepsake, joining a meeting and publishing a recovery photograph are three separate decisions. You can participate without making an anniversary image available to a wider audience.
Medallions to consider
If you want an AA anniversary keepsake, these designs can be used privately or shown only by your choice. Buying a coin does not require sharing a photo or disclosing your recovery online.

Common questions
Do headphones make my conversation private?
They reduce speaker audio reaching the room; people nearby may still hear your voice.
Can I assume recording is impossible?
No. Ask about group expectations and decide what you are comfortable sharing.
Must I show my anniversary coin on camera?
Discuss recognition with the host and choose what, if anything, you want to show.
