Sharing Al-Anon Information Online: Protect the Person Behind the Post

You want to help somebody find Al-Anon and have a useful link ready to share. The caption, photograph or contact details around that link can disclose much more than the resource itself. Pause long enough to see who could be identified before turning a private connection into a public post.

Start with the source and intended audience

Al-Anon's Writers Reaching Out resource explains anonymity when communicating outside the fellowship. It distinguishes describing Al-Anon from identifying yourself publicly as a member. Read the relevant guidance before treating an ordinary personal social account as a suitable public outreach channel.

Ask what the post needs to accomplish. Providing an official meeting-information link may answer the question without naming anyone who attends. You do not need to add a personal endorsement or another person's recovery background to make the destination understandable.

Keep public contacts separate from personal details

The official article on sharing meeting information while maintaining anonymity addresses identifying contact information in public listings. Use the group's approved public contact route rather than copying someone's private phone number from a member list.

Review the entire image or document before sharing. A contact sheet, notification preview or handwritten note can reveal a name even when the main subject looks harmless. If something is intended only for a defined group, ask about its purpose before moving it to a public audience.

Look beyond the face in the photograph

A picture can identify a person through its caption, tags, location or surrounding conversation. Cropping a face is not a reason to assume that all identifying context has disappeared. Consider what a reader who knows the person could infer from the combination.

Our Al-Anon chip guide concerns local recognition customs, which should be checked with the group. A photograph of a token is not permission to announce its owner's participation. Ask before connecting a keepsake with a named person or their family.

Use a clear link and a restrained explanation

Write enough to describe where the link leads, then let the official resource provide its own detail. Avoid retelling an identifiable member's disclosure as an example of why a stranger should attend. Another person's private experience does not become yours to publish because you found it moving.

If you discover you have shared identifying information, stop extending its circulation and address the specific post or recipient. Do not repeat the details in a public explanation. For future sharing, agree a practical review step, especially when a group contact list, event photograph or anniversary caption is involved.
