An Al-Anon Group Inventory: Turn Observations Into a Useful Next Discussion

The group knows that something could work better, but each conversation returns to a different complaint. An inventory offers a more deliberate way to look at shared practices. Its value depends on making room for observations and then deciding what the group will actually do with them.

Identify the two parts before choosing a method

The official G-8a inventory contains questions about group life, meetings and a member's own part. Its companion, G-8b, describes possible methods and space for reflection. Read both before assuming the only option is completing every question in one sitting.

Agree the purpose and practical arrangement: who introduces the material, how much time is available and how members can contribute. Share that plan in advance where possible. A person should not have to guess whether an ordinary meeting has unexpectedly become a vote on several changes.

Describe a practice without assigning a motive

Bring an observable example rather than an account of what another person must be thinking. A missing meeting contact, an unclear literature arrangement or an unfinished service handover gives the group something concrete to investigate. A broad judgment about someone's character does not explain the task.

Include what is working as well as what is difficult. If a process already helps newcomers or makes participation easier, describe the useful part so it can be retained. The point of reviewing a routine is to understand it, not to replace everything simply because an inventory is happening.

Keep shared questions distinct from private disclosures

Invite members to speak about their own participation without requiring a personal recovery account as proof that their observation counts. Avoid copying sensitive individual responses into wider circulation merely because the group gathered them for discussion.

Ask how notes will be used, who needs them and what should be recorded as a shared issue. If the inventory raises a question outside the group's competence, identify an appropriate route rather than pretending that a meeting discussion can settle every professional or personal matter.

Separate findings, proposals and decisions

An observation can lead to a proposal, and a proposal still needs the group's agreed decision process. Record what was decided, who accepted a task and when the group will review it. Keep unresolved questions visible so they do not quietly become assumed instructions.

Recognition customs can be one practical matter to clarify. Our Al-Anon chip article is background for asking about local practice, not a mandate to introduce tokens. Discuss any proposed expense and occasion explicitly; an AA sobriety medallion does not automatically represent an Al-Anon anniversary.

Common questions

Are G-8a and G-8b the same document?

They are companion resources with questions and methods or reflections. Read both to plan the discussion.

Does collecting responses automatically change the format?

No. Distinguish observations and proposals from actual group decisions.

Must an inventory introduce an anniversary-token system?

No. Clarify any local recognition practice without assuming tokens are required.
