Going to a Concert Sober: Plan the Night Around the Music
You may want to hear a favourite band and still feel unsure about the evening around it. The queue, bar area, crowd and late journey home are separate decisions. Planning those parts can help you decide whether this particular concert fits what you want right now.
Look at this venue, not concerts in general
Check the current venue information for transport, permitted bags, water access, seating and re-entry. A seated theatre, small standing room and outdoor festival can involve very different logistics. Do not assume an earlier visit tells you what the rules are now.
Think about where you would prefer to spend the evening. If a bar queue or crowded standing area is something you want to avoid, see whether a different ticket or location is available. You do not need to prove that you can enjoy every kind of venue.
Choose a companion who understands the plan
If you are going with somebody, tell them what would make the night workable. For example: “I want to go for the music, skip drinks beforehand and head home afterward.” Ask whether they are comfortable with that plan before depending on them for transport.
Discuss what happens if one of you wants to leave early. A companion should not have to guess that you are uncomfortable. You might agree on a simple message or a meeting point away from the crowd. If you attend alone, arrange a check-in with someone who has agreed to be available at that time.
Keep the journey home independent
Check the last train or bus and where you can be collected. If a ride booking is your backup, consider reception, likely waiting areas and whether you have enough battery. Save the venue address and a practical pickup point.
A shared lift can be convenient, but it should not leave you waiting through an after-party you do not want. Agree on a separate way home if plans diverge. This is ordinary event planning with your own priorities included, rather than a guarantee that the evening will feel easy.
Decide what to do if the evening changes
You can step away from the crowd, contact your agreed support person or leave. Know whether re-entry is allowed before going outside. If leaving means missing songs, the ticket still gave you a choice; it did not create a debt to stay.
AA's Living Sober offers practical suggestions for daily situations, including social occasions. Discussing your plan with someone who knows your circumstances may be more useful than borrowing another person's confidence. A concert that suited them may not suit you this week.
Give the night a clear ending
Plan something simple after the show: travel home, food if you need it, and a short message to the person expecting to hear from you. You do not have to add a late gathering just because other people are going.
The following day, notice what worked. Perhaps having a seat helped, or a daytime show would suit you better. Keep that information for the next ticket decision. If the event felt wrong, choose a different setting next time. Enjoying music can take many forms, including listening at home with a friend.
Medallions to consider
A medallion can remain at home if carrying it would feel distracting or risk losing it in a crowd. If you choose one for an anniversary, select the actual milestone independently of any concert date.

Common questions
What if I already bought an expensive ticket?
The cost does not require you to attend or stay. Check the organiser's actual transfer or resale rules if you decide against going.
Do I need to tell everyone I am sober?
No. Tell a companion what they need to know to respect the plan. You can keep your wider history private.
Is staying for the encore a sobriety achievement?
There is no need to use the length of your attendance as a test. Choose the departure that fits your circumstances.
