Traveling Sober: Make a Recovery Plan for the Trip You Booked

A weekend away changes your usual times, places and contact with people. A longer holiday can add time zones, unfamiliar transport and social plans you haven't chosen yourself. Before packing, look at the actual itinerary and decide what you want to keep available. A useful travel plan fits this trip, not an imaginary version in which every day runs on time.

Read the itinerary for gaps and pressure points

Look beyond the main attraction. When will you arrive? Will you be alone during a long stopover? Does a group tour end each evening at a bar? These are practical details you can ask about before paying for additional activities.

Choose what you want to attend and what you may skip. If another person is arranging the trip, state any preference that affects bookings: an alcohol-free activity, a separate room or transport you can use independently. A private preference doesn't have to become an explanation to the entire travel group.

Find current local information

If meetings are part of your recovery, check options near where you'll actually stay. Read the language, attendance label and location carefully. A meeting across a city may be less usable than it looks on a map when evening transport is limited.

A.A.'s local-resource finder points to service contacts. Its Living Sober section on meetings also discusses finding meetings while away. Confirm uncertain details with the local resource instead of relying on an old screenshot.

Agree on contact before crossing time zones

If you're planning calls with a sponsor or friend, specify both the date and time zone. Check whether arrival day puts you on a different calendar date. Ask what contact is realistic and what to do if your agreed person is unavailable.

Save essential numbers and addresses where you can access them. If using online meetings, consider the connection and a private place to join. A shared lobby may not be where you want to speak about personal matters. Check that your plan works with the accommodation you've actually booked.

Give delays an ordinary backup plan

A cancelled train or late flight can remove the meeting or call you planned around. Keep another reasonable option, such as a different meeting time or an agreed message to a contact. Avoid making one booking the only possible way to connect.

Food, rest and onward transport also belong in the practical plan. Don't promise yourself a packed schedule immediately after a tiring journey. Leave enough flexibility to change an activity without losing the whole day. If you have an individual care plan, discuss relevant travel arrangements with your provider before departure.

Separate a keepsake from the support plan

You may like carrying a familiar coin in a pocket or bag. Choose how privately to keep it and where it won't be easily lost. Our coin-packing guide addresses the object itself; this article is about the arrangements around your trip.

There's no need to buy a new milestone because you're traveling. If a real anniversary occurs while you're away, decide whether you want to mark it there or at home. Check the group's arrangements before expecting a presentation at a meeting you're visiting. A welcome visit doesn't create a guaranteed gift service.

Medallions to consider

If an actual sobriety anniversary falls during the trip, these are optional keepsakes. Check the duration menu and your arrangements before ordering; no delivery timing is promised here.

Common questions

Do I need a new coin for a trip?

No. A trip isn't a sobriety milestone, and carrying a keepsake is optional.

How do I check a meeting abroad?

Use current local service resources and ask about uncertain language, location or attendance details.

What if travel disrupts my plan?

Use the backup options you've arranged and contact suitable support. Rework the schedule around the actual delay.
