More Than One AA Sponsor: Make the Arrangement Clear Before Comparing Answers

You value more than one member's experience and wonder whether both should become your sponsor. The useful question is not simply how many names to collect. It is what each relationship means and how you will communicate when perspectives differ.

Read the question in its AA context

The official sponsorship pamphlet addresses whether a newcomer may have more than one sponsor. The current version describes why many favour one sponsor, including avoiding a search for whichever answer the newcomer wants. Use the current text rather than a quotation from an older copy.

Consider the need behind your question. You may want broader experience, more reliable opportunities to talk or clarity about a current relationship. Name that need before assuming that adding a sponsor is the only way to address it.

Distinguish sponsorship from other contact

A member who answers a question or returns a call has not necessarily accepted an ongoing sponsorship relationship. Ask directly what you are requesting and give the person room to describe their willingness and availability. Do not announce a second sponsor before that conversation happens.

A contact list can include willing people with different kinds of experience. Keep their actual agreements clear rather than giving everyone the same role. You can appreciate a conversation without treating it as a substitute for a commitment you have already discussed elsewhere.

Be open about differing perspectives

If you want more than one sponsor, discuss how that will work. Describe the purpose honestly and ask how each person understands the arrangement. Hiding one conversation from another can create confusion about what you have already tried, agreed or asked.

When answers differ, explain the actual question and context instead of reporting that another person has overruled them. Peer experience is not a competition for authority. A medical, legal or other professional question still belongs with an appropriately qualified source.

Choose clarity over seniority or gifts

Our oldtimer guide discusses long participation in AA. Length of sobriety alone does not settle whether a particular relationship works for you. Look at the conversation and the arrangement rather than assigning automatic rank to the person with more years.

If you want to express thanks, do not make a purchase stand in for explaining what you need. A numbered AA medallion should reflect its recipient's confirmed sobriety occasion, not the number of people sponsoring you or the duration of a particular arrangement.

Medallions to consider

A thank-you gift is optional and separate from discussing sponsorship. If a recipient wants an AA anniversary medallion, confirm that person's milestone and design preference first.

Common questions

Does the AA pamphlet discuss more than one sponsor?

Yes. Read the whole discussion rather than relying on a blanket yes-or-no slogan.

Is every recovery contact also my sponsor?

No. Ask directly about the relationship and the help being offered.

Does longer sobriety automatically settle a disagreement?

No. Clarify the question and each person's role without treating experience as rank.
