Can You Collect an AA Chip for Someone Else? Ask Before Making the Gesture

Can You Collect an AA Chip for Someone Else? Ask Before Making the Gesture

Someone cannot attend the meeting where they usually mark an anniversary, and you would like to bring them a chip. The gesture sounds simple until you realise that the group and the recipient may have different expectations. Clarifying both can keep a kind intention from becoming an unwanted announcement.

Begin with the recipient's preference

Ask whether the person wants a token collected, which occasion they want recognised and what you may say on their behalf. An absence does not give you permission to explain why they are away. Keep health, family, work and travel details out of a public request unless they specifically want them shared.

If it is a surprise, consider whether the surprise depends on disclosing something private. A simple question beforehand may be more considerate than preserving the reveal. You can offer to help without making attendance or recognition into another obligation.

Ask about the group's actual custom

AA's chip and medallion FAQ explains that anniversary customs vary locally. It does not establish a universal proxy-collection procedure. Contact the person responsible for that group's arrangements and ask what, if anything, is possible.

Our guide to obtaining AA chips provides background for that conversation. Distinguish requesting an object from asking for a public presentation. Do not promise either before the group has answered the specific question.

Arrange the handover clearly

If everyone agrees, confirm who will collect the token and how it will reach the recipient. A named person and an ordinary plan are more useful than several friends assuming somebody else will do it. Check the actual milestone rather than copying the number on an old photograph.

Keep the message proportionate. You might simply say that the person asked you to bring the token, if that is accurate and they consented to the wording. Do not turn the handover into a speech about someone else's recovery or suggest that you can certify their private circumstances.

Separate a retail gift from group recognition

If the group does not offer the arrangement you hoped for, ask the recipient whether a separately purchased keepsake would be welcome. A retailer can provide a catalog product; that does not make it a token issued by the absent person's home group.

Choose a design and selector option for the confirmed occasion. Avoid using the purchase to pressure the person into attending, speaking or displaying it. The gift can remain a private gesture between two people, with a message the recipient is comfortable receiving.

Medallions to consider

If the recipient wants a separate AA keepsake, these current catalog designs are optional choices. Select the confirmed sobriety milestone and describe the gift accurately, without implying that a group issued it.

Common questions

Does every group allow someone else to collect a chip?

There is no universal procedure in AA's token FAQ. Ask the particular group.

May I explain why the recipient is absent?

Only share the information and wording the person has agreed you may share.

Is a retail medallion automatically a home-group token?

No. A personal purchase and a group's recognition arrangement are separate.
