AA Clubhouse vs. AA Group: Check the Meeting, Not Just the Building
A building may have a familiar recovery name, a coffee area and several meetings on its noticeboard. That does not make every activity inside it the same AA group. Separating the building from the meeting helps you ask the right questions about access, membership and the session you want to attend.
Start with the distinction
AA's guidelines on AA and clubs discuss their relationship and separate roles. A club may provide premises, while different groups use rooms at different times. The building's name alone does not identify which group is meeting.
Save the group's name, day and start time from a current listing. If the noticeboard is old or unclear, confirm with the listed group contact or local service resource. A door being open does not establish that your intended meeting is about to begin.
Ask who handles which question
For directions, a building entrance or room location, the venue contact may be useful. For the meeting's format, participation guidance or anniversary arrangements, ask the group. Sometimes the same person can answer both, but the responsibilities remain different.
If you arrive between sessions, ask where to wait and which space is available. Don't assume that every room is open for informal use. Respect other meetings happening in the building, including meetings from separate fellowships.
Keep club arrangements separate from AA membership
A club may have its own membership or facilities arrangements. Ask what any payment concerns before deciding. AA membership has no dues or fees; optional club membership is not a substitute for that principle.
Likewise, a cafe purchase or event charge should not be confused with a meeting's voluntary collection. Our guide to AA meeting costs explains those separate decisions. You can ask for clarification without discussing your finances in front of the room.
Check the group's actual chip custom
A display case, shop counter or bowl of tokens may belong to the venue rather than your meeting. Ask who handles milestone recognition and whether there is a process for a particular year. Do not assume a design on sale is what a group distributes.
Our guide to obtaining AA chips covers meeting and retail routes. A purchase is optional and does not make the buyer a member of a club or group. Confirm the occasion and recipient's wishes before choosing a decorative coin.
Make the next visit easier
Before leaving, note the entrance you used, the correct room and any access information you need. Keep the group contact separately from a venue booking number. That makes a later schedule question easier to direct.
If the setting does not work for you, use current local information to consider another meeting. A difficult visit to one building does not tell you what every group is like. Decide based on the actual meeting and practical access, rather than the appearance of the premises.
Medallions to consider
These are optional retail AA anniversary medallions. Buying one does not provide club membership, meeting access or any venue service. Choose the actual milestone separately from the number of meetings attended.

Common questions
Are all meetings in a clubhouse one home group?
Not necessarily. Check the name and arrangements of the particular group.
Must I join a club to become an AA member?
AA membership and club membership are separate. Ask what any venue membership offer covers.
Can I assume the building always has a meeting?
No. Confirm the current day, time and room for the meeting you want.
