Finding an Accessible AA Meeting: Ask About the Details You Need
An accessibility label is a useful starting point, but it may not answer the question that matters to you. A level entrance says little about the toilet, sound quality or distance from transport. Ask about the particular features you need before making a journey.
Turn a general label into a practical enquiry
AA's accessibilities checklist gives groups questions for examining barriers. You can use that approach to make your own enquiry precise: which entrance, which room and which parts of the visit need checking?
For example, ask whether the step-free entrance is unlocked at the meeting time, whether a lift serves the correct floor, or how far the room is from the drop-off point. A description of the route is more useful than a broad reassurance that the building is accessible.
Check the room and the whole visit
Ask about seating, space to move, lighting and the nearest usable toilet as relevant to you. If a feature is essential, confirm it with somebody who knows the venue. A person familiar with the meeting may still need to check a building detail.
Consider the return journey too. An entrance available during office hours may have different evening arrangements. Ask how to contact the host if the expected route is closed, and keep that information where you can reach it easily.
Ask about communication and participation
You may need clearer sound, a place with a good view of the speaker, readable materials or another communication arrangement. Say what would help and ask what is currently available. Don't assume interpreting or equipment can be arranged without notice.
AA's accessibility guidelines offer further background for groups. If somebody offers assistance, you can explain the part you want help with. Practical support should follow your preference, including when you would rather do something yourself.
Review online options on their own terms
An online meeting removes a journey but may introduce other barriers. Ask about available platform features, how to request a turn and whether the materials or joining instructions work with the tools you use. Check any captioning or interpretation arrangement directly.
Our online-versus-in-person guide compares practical access choices without assuming they suit everyone equally. If your preferred format is unavailable at one meeting, ask the local resource about other current options. Do not treat an unverified label as a promise.
Include any anniversary arrangement you want
If you plan to receive a chip, ask how the group handles it and explain what would make the handover workable. There is no need to wait until you are standing in front of the room to raise a seating or communication question.
Our accessible coin-presentation guide covers that separate moment. Meeting access comes first; a keepsake is optional. After the visit, pass on any useful correction to the listing through the published contact, without disclosing another person's needs.
Medallions to consider
If you separately choose an anniversary medallion, ask how the person would like to receive and use it. These catalog photographs show sample years; a purchase cannot establish that a meeting or presentation meets anyone's access needs.

Common questions
Do I have to give my medical history?
You can begin with the practical arrangement you need and decide what further information to share.
Does an accessibility symbol cover every need?
No single label answers every question. Confirm the relevant details.
Is an online meeting always the easier option?
It depends on your needs and the actual platform arrangements. Check both access routes.
