AA Meetings and Shift Work: Build a Plan Around the Rota

AA Meetings and Shift Work: Build a Plan Around the Rota

A meeting that works on Tuesday may clash with next week's shift. Rotating hours can make a fixed weekly plan feel fragile, even when you want to keep attending. Start with the rota you actually have and build more than one workable option around it.

Map the whole time window

Write down when your shift ends, how long the journey takes and what other responsibilities fall between work and the meeting. Include enough time to eat or settle in if you need it. A meeting's start time alone does not tell you whether attendance is realistic.

Separate a predictable rota from last-minute changes. You might be able to plan the first and need a backup for the second. Use ordinary calendar notes without identifying AA on a shared work calendar if that would reveal more than you want.

Check options for different shifts

Use AA's current local resources to look for suitable meeting information. Build a short list for early shifts, late shifts and days off as relevant. Do not assume a meeting exists at a convenient hour in every area.

AA's meeting information includes in-person, online and telephone formats. Verify the actual listing, eligibility and joining instructions. For an online meeting in another region, convert the time and check it again when clocks change.

Make the transition from work practical

If you travel directly to a meeting, decide what you need to carry and where you can safely leave work belongings. If you attend from home, allow time to arrive rather than assuming a call can begin the moment a shift ends.

Keep work duties and personal participation separate. Don't join from a situation where your attention is required elsewhere or where other people can overhear members. If the available space is unsuitable, choose another time or format instead of relying on a setup you cannot realistically use.

Agree contact around availability

Tell willing contacts which times usually work and whether a message before calling is helpful. If your schedule changes, update the arrangement. Somebody whose working hours differ may need advance notice to make time.

Our recovery contact-list guide can help you keep preferences clear. You do not have to rely on one person to fill every gap. Save current meeting details alongside agreed contacts so an unexpected shift change leaves you with another practical choice.

Review the plan after a rota cycle

Notice what actually worked: the journey, the timing, the privacy and the contact afterward. Adjust the part that caused difficulty. Missing one option because work changed does not require discarding the whole list.

Ask the group about any service commitment that may conflict with your shifts before accepting it. If you want a milestone recognised, use our guide to obtaining AA chips as a starting point for asking about local arrangements. Attendance on a fixed weekday and a sobriety date are separate timelines.

Medallions to consider

A numbered medallion refers to the selected sobriety milestone, not attendance at a certain weekly meeting. If you choose a personal keepsake, check the year or other duration on the product selector.

Annual options run from 1 Year to 65 Years; 24 Hours and 18 Months options are also listed. Choose the intended milestone in the Sobriety Time selector; the main photo shows a sample XXIII inscription.

Common questions

Must I attend the same meeting every week?

You can explore different listed meetings. If you hold a service role, clarify the commitment with that group.

Can online meetings solve every scheduling problem?

They may add options, but you still need a suitable time, connection and private place to participate.

Should I sacrifice rest to fit every meeting on my list?

Make a realistic plan around your needs. Persistent sleep or health concerns call for appropriate professional advice.
