Thanksgiving Sober as an Overnight Guest: Plan Beyond the Meal

Thanksgiving Sober as an Overnight Guest: Plan Beyond the Meal

Thanksgiving at a relative's home can involve more than dinner. There may be several evenings together, a shared room, plans you did not arrange and limited transport. If you are staying overnight, consider the whole visit before deciding that a plan for the meal covers everything.

Agree on the actual visit

Ask when people expect you to arrive and leave, where you would sleep and what activities are planned. If the arrangement involves sharing space, understand what that means for privacy and quiet time. Avoid relying on a vague “we'll work it out.”

You can make a practical request without explaining your full recovery history: “I'd like an hour to myself in the evening,” or “I'll organise my own ride.” Give the host information they need for planning, while choosing what personal detail you want to share.

Consider accommodation before you unpack

Think about whether the proposed room and household schedule work for you. A hotel or another arrangement may be an option if it fits your budget; check actual availability and cancellation terms before making promises.

You can also choose a shorter or daytime visit. If you decide not to stay overnight, explain the change clearly enough for the host to plan beds and meals. The invitation does not require you to test whether an unsuitable arrangement will become easier once you arrive.

Check meetings and contact across the holiday

If meetings are part of your plan, use current AA resources for the destination and verify holiday details with the local listing or contact. Do not assume a usual timetable or building entrance will remain unchanged.

Agree a realistic check-in with a willing person, including the time zone. Ask where you can make a private call, or identify somewhere suitable outside the house. Headphones alone do not make your own speech private when others can hear you.

Separate your participation from other people's plans

Decide what you want to join and what you may skip, including late evenings or a trip centred on alcohol. Ask about drink options that suit your preferences. You can suggest a walk or another activity without taking responsibility for entertaining the whole household.

AA's Living Sober offers practical discussion of everyday situations. Use a conversation with somebody who knows your circumstances to consider your visit. Nobody else's successful holiday proves that the same arrangement will suit you.

Keep a workable way to change the stay

Save transport details and consider how you could leave without depending on someone whose plans differ. If you change the visit, send the practical information the host needs rather than starting a long argument about whether your reason is sufficient.

Plan the return home too: travel, ordinary responsibilities and any agreed contact afterward. If an anniversary falls near the visit, ask whether you want it acknowledged separately. A holiday gathering need not become a public recovery celebration simply because family members are present.

Medallions to consider

If a confirmed sobriety anniversary falls during the visit and the recipient wants a keepsake, choose it separately from the Thanksgiving invitation. These AA medallions are optional; check both the design and the actual milestone.

Annual options run from 1 Year to 50 Years; 24 Hours and 18 Months options are also listed. Choose the intended milestone in the Sobriety Time selector; the main photo shows a sample IX inscription.

Common questions

Must I ask everyone in the house not to drink?

You can state what you need and ask what is possible, then decide whether that setting works for you. You cannot guarantee other people's choices.

Is a shorter visit impolite?

A clear, timely arrangement gives the host something concrete to plan around. Explain the practical change without overpromising.

Should a host surprise me with an anniversary coin?

Recognition is personal. Ask hosts to discuss it with you first if you prefer privacy.
