What Is an AA Alkathon? Check the Holiday Schedule, Not Just the Name
A holiday flyer says alkathon, and you imagine a meeting available whenever you arrive. The name alone does not tell you the opening hours, programme or who can attend each session. Read the actual schedule before building the rest of your holiday around it.
Use a dated example to understand the variation
Checked on October 28, 2026, South Jersey Intergroup's Thanksgiving announcement lists hourly meeting starts on November 26, beginning at 8 a.m. with the last meeting starting at 4 p.m. That is a specific daytime schedule, not a round-the-clock promise.
Treat this as an example of why details matter, not a recommendation to travel there. Find the current announcement for the event you intend to attend, and recheck with its organiser before making firm plans.
Separate venue hours from session times
An event's start and end may include food, setup or fellowship between meetings. Look for the time of the particular session you want, its room and any stated format. A meal or social period is not automatically a meeting.
If the flyer is unclear, ask the organiser a precise question: when does the next meeting begin, which entrance is used, or is a particular session open to observers? Keep the answer with the schedule rather than relying on someone else's recollection of last year.
Plan an ordinary visit within the larger event
Choose a realistic arrival and departure time. Check transport, seating or access needs and any practical responsibilities you have elsewhere. You do not have to attend every session merely because several are available.
For online or hybrid participation, confirm the joining method and time zone from the official announcement. Do not assume a link from a regular weekly meeting applies to the holiday event. Our online-meeting privacy guide covers checking your name, surroundings and sound before joining.
Ask before volunteering or bringing something
If you want to help, ask what the organiser needs and when. A potluck invitation, setup task or chairing slot may each have different arrangements. Avoid arriving with a commitment that someone else must unexpectedly supervise.
Check any food or contribution information directly rather than assuming an activity is included, free or required. A clear offer for a limited task is easier to coordinate than a general promise to remain for the entire event.
Check milestone recognition separately
A programme of holiday meetings does not establish which chips will be available or when anniversaries will be recognised. Our AA chip guide covers asking the group about its actual custom.
If you choose a retail keepsake, use the person's confirmed sobriety time. An event date or a souvenir inscription is a different reference. You can attend a holiday meeting, decline a social activity and keep an anniversary acknowledgement private if those choices fit your needs.
Medallions to consider
These optional AA anniversary keepsakes are separate from event registration, meals, collections and any local chip supply. Confirm the person's actual milestone and review the product selector before ordering.

Common questions
Does alkathon always mean twenty-four hours?
No. Read the actual dated schedule and individual meeting times.
Can I assume every session is open to family guests?
Check the event's session formats and ask the organiser where the listing is unclear.
Will a particular anniversary coin be available?
Ask about recognition separately. An event listing does not establish token stock or design.
